About

How are these Psalms different?

When you think of singing Psalms, do you think of getting a root canal or shoveling the sidewalk? Is singing Psalms something you might do at church if forced at gunpoint? Does Psalm-singing conjure up in your mind a bunch of old people who might just get hauled off to the grave after church...if they make it that far?

Or is singing and listening to Psalms a highlight of your day? What if you had compelling Psalms you wanted to hear or sing available in your daily life: in your car, at work, during your exercise routine, at home by yourself or with family, in life's battles and more? What if the Psalms could be more relevant, stirring and addictive than the latest Adelle song?

God gave us the words of the Psalms but he didn't give us any music. In every age and every culture, men of God need to put the word of God into the common language of the people. So also men of God need to put the Psalms of God into the common musical language of the people.

"I remember the Psalms from the little Church of Ireland church.   As a child going I remember thinking, GREAT words, SHAME about the tunes...."  - Bono  (lead vocals for U2)

I and my team (consisting of both Ukrainian and American talent) are creating "Addictive Psalms for the World".   The early church down through the centuries sang these Psalms but in modern times they've gone out of vogue.   Instead, songs of abstract attributes of God written by men or repetitious cliche's fill the worship of congregations.   The Psalms are the songs revealed by God that he has commanded us to sing to Him.   They are the attributes of God applied to our everyday lives as we launch attacks against the gates of hell in the spiritual and physical warfare of the kingdom.   They are the promises that only God can write and grant to His people and are thus the comfort and hope of salvation, deliverance, prosperity and victory for God's people today.

“Wherever the Psalter is abandoned, an incomparable treasure vanishes from the Christian Church. With its recovery will come unsuspected power.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Psalms unify. Think about it. Lots of music has been created to be used in worshiping God by men of many persuasions, but the Psalms were created by God to be sung by men of all persuasions.   Their truth and relevancy for God's people today is obvious from God's command to His people in the New Testament to sing them with thanksgiving in their heart to God.

"Let Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16).
"...filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father..." (Ephesians 5:18-19)

Psalms, Hymns and spiritual Songs are only correctly identified by the Bible itself.   God's word interpreted by God's word is the only way to get the true and correct interpretation and application of God's thoughts.   Paul in these verses is merely repeating what the Psalms themselves tell us when we look at the first translation of the Old Testament in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew) which was the Bible used in the days of Jesus and the apostles.  One need look no further in the Septuagint than Psalm 4-6 to find that Hymns and spiritual or inspired Songs are simply subcategories of the Psalms.   Psalm 4 is a spiritual Song and Psalm, Psalm 5 is a Psalm and Psalm 6 is a Hymn and Psalm.

Psalm 4 - For the End, a Song of David among the Psalms.
Psalm 5 - For the End, a Psalm of David, concerning her that inherits.
Psalm 6 - For the End, a Psalm of David among the Hymns for the eighth.

The councils of Christ's bride over the centuries have commanded the singing of God's songs and at the same time prohibited singing the songs of men in worship.   As early as the Council of Laodicea held around AD 364, the universal church of Christ declared in Canon 59:

"No psalms composed by private individuals nor any uncanonical books may be read in the church, but only the Canonical Books of the Old and New Testaments."

This means it was as wrong to read from the apocrypha in the public worship of God as it was to sing a song from men's imaginations (man created hymns and praise and worship rather than the inspired Psalms of the Bible).   The general Council of Chalcedon (from which we get the Definition of Chalcedon) adopted the canons of the Council of Laodicea in AD 451 again prohibiting the use of uninspired Psalms in the worship of God.

In 1618 the Synod of Dordt commissioned a new translation of the Bible from the original languages into Dutch along with commentary on the Bible. This was approved by the Synod of Dordt and is known as the Dutch Dordt Bible and therefore it has conciliar authority (the authority of a Council of Christ's Church). The Dordt Commentary on the Bible reads this way when it comes to understanding Ephesians 5:19:
“These three sorts of spiritual singing serve one end: namely to recreate the spirit and are in this way distinguished: Psalms are all kinds of spiritual songs which are exercised not only with the voice, but also with the stringed instruments, of music. Hymns: thanksgiving to God and metrical celebration of God’s grace towards us. Spiritual songs: such as contain all manner of spiritual doctrines — see Colossians 3:16). And these several names seem to be taken from the several inscriptions of the Psalms of David. They are to be sung not just with the tongue and instrument but also with the heart” (https://www.statenvertaling.net/kanttekeningen/Ef5.htm - commentary of footnote #26) or (approximate google English translated version of the Dutch Dordt Commentary)

Essentially, the Commissioners of the Synod of Dordt state that the three divisions are to emphasize three types of singing that can be done from the psalms. That is the historic view of Christ's bride. The Westminster Divines had this commentary when they began drafting the Westminster Confession of Faith and used it thoroughly. In fact, not only was the Dordt Commentary approved by the Synod of Dordt for use, but it was officially approved and adopted by the Westminster Assembly in 1645.  Notice the inclusion here of instruments as the Psalms in the Bible declare are to be used in the congregational worship along with the singing from hearts of thankfulness.

Then in 1647 the Westminster Confession Confession declared the Biblical view of the regulative principle of worship:
"But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by Himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture." In the following list of those acts that are acceptable worship to God is "...the singing of psalms with grace in the heart."

No songs of men are included but only the songs of God. For the fourth time in the history of the church spanning some 1200 years of time, the church has declared the worship of God in song to be solely the inspired Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs of the Bible.

Currently we are creating new 4 part arrangements from the inspired Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs book of the Bible.  We've seen how simply replacing an older tune with a more contemporary one will allow the words of the Psalm to leap into our minds making it far easier to memorize and meditate on God's promises as we worship Him in praise.

Dual Purpose - Sunday and everyday

So we are creating songs that can both be sung by a lead vocal (i.e. YOU in the shower or driving in your car or walking down the grocery aisle) and at the same time are arranged for 4 part harmony so that you can sing them with your family or the entire congregation.    These are compelling melodies that are memorable and inspiring.   Our Psalms are equally at home in Sunday worship and driving tractor Monday morning.

Of course we hope that many different folks in different congregations and denominations will join in this endeavor.   In addition to the pdf we will offer a finished audio track in .mp3 and .wav format so that you can sing along and quickly learn the Psalm at the DENOMINATIONAL LEVEL.   Further we will provide an instrumentation track with no vocal that you can use in your worship at home, in corporate worship or in the car or anywhere.   They can also be sung with simply the piano accompaniment.   No other worship music including most praise and worship is this versatile.

So how does this work for you the patron?   We will aim for 1 new Psalm per month, with 2 being the maximum.   Each patron pays for each completed work, NOT per month.   On average expect to be a patron for 1-2 new works per month.   So whatever level you sign up for, understand it is payment per completed Psalm.   We will distribute upcoming Psalms whenever they are completed and ready for distribution to you at which time you will be charged your patronage level and you will receive your reward for which you signed up.

Currently Psalm 6 is ready for download and printing (you can listen to Psalm 6 on the video above).   When we have a total of $1000 of patrons it will be released for download.   Help us spread the word!

The different tiers.   Think about this for a second.   When a congregation signs up for the CONGREGATIONAL BASIC tier and has 250 members, this means it is paying $1/person for the Psalm which is less than purchasing new music on Itunes.   But you also get the 4 part sheet music which is worth another $5 per download, plus the piano instrumental version for personal and congregational accompaniment.   We hope you will tell all your friends and pray that 100's of churches will return to the singing of God's word in the Psalms.   If we get to higher levels, say at the $3500 level of total patronage, we can select certain Psalms for accompaniment tracks with live orchestra and do some orchestral sessions as well as engage others to help in more languages.   Why not?   Why not make the Psalms the best music on the planet?   Consider how much combining awesome music with the best content on planet earth, is worth?   This may be the best music value in our world.

Did you know there is no complete Psalm book for singing for Russian speaking people?

We are creating these Psalms for both English and Russian speakers at present but may add more languages in time.   With your help we can provide Russian speakers with really cool inspiring Psalms and at the same time provide our English speaking friends with these same awesome melodies.   But it won't happen without your support and help!

Goals

$1000 total patronage:

The labor involved begins with selection of a Psalm, Hymn or Spiritual Song.  After which many hours are put into creating a melody that is inspiring, singable and fits the words of the Psalm.  Then the 3 harmonies need to be created.   Next, work is done at creating a new version of lyrics if needed or selecting preexisting lyrics that closely match each phrase of the Biblical text.   Concurrently, the Psalm is given Russian lyrics as well.   This usually takes 1-2 weeks to get to this point.

Once we are at this minimum goal level we will launch more and more Psalms as we are able (usually 1 per month on average).   All patrons will receive the finished arrangement  in 4 part harmony and will include a piano accompaniment track.

$3500 total patronage:

When this patronage level is met then work begins on commercial quality production.   This includes vocals and depending on the Psalm may include live orchestra.   It also includes all production work and mixing and mastering the finished arrangement.   Both the finished track with inspiring lead vocals as well as a karaoke track with just the instrumental arrangement will be yours so YOU can sing them everywhere you go!
