At the request of a friend about a year ago, Calvin began teaching piano lessons over the internet! He has found he can do almost everything with remote students that he does with students at his home. There are a few limitations of course but after a sufficient trial period Calvin is now offering piano instruction via webcam. One must be somewhat technologically savvy (or have a friend help them set it up). Here's a list of technological requirements:
1. High-speed internet.
2. A fast computer (probably at least 1.5 ghz with 1 gig of ram minimum).
3. High quality high definition webcam - (I've been using a Phillips SPC890NC - around $50).
4. A skype account (free software at skype.com to communicate over the internet).
5. Boom microphone stand or similar to mount the webcam in the desired position.
6. Headset for computer (headphones and microphone).
7. A scanner for sending music and assignments back and forth.
One setup is to use a laptop (or monitor) sitting on a keyboard where you can see Calvin while facing forward. Calvin has found investing in a good 15 ft USB cable extension (ebay is a good source for these) gives him lots of options with regard to where his webcam is in relationship to the computer to which it is hooked. Depending on the setup he uses the microphone from the webcam as often this gives the best sound.

Calvin has been teaching piano composition for over 13 years and has given many seminars on music philosophy, beginning composition and teaching music in the home. His emphasis is on the internalizing of music such that the student is comfortable playing with or without sheet music and the development of the complete pianist, one who is able not only to read but to write their own music.
